How to Transfer a File to a Remote Computer Using HyperTerminal

You can use HyperTerminal to transfer a file to a remote computer. You might want to transfer a software program from your computer to a computer bulletin board or to transfer a large file to a friend's computer from your computer. You will need to have a modem connected to your telephone line. These instructions are for Windows 98.

Step1
Open HyperTerminal. (Open the Start menu and click Programs, then Accessories, then Communications.)
Step2
Enter the telephone number of the computer bulletin board that you are going to access.
Step3
Click Dial. The modem will dial the bulletin board and make a connection, unless the line is busy or there is some other problem.
Step4
Follow the instructions that have been provided by the bulletin board operator (called the Sys Op).
Step5
Move around in the bulletin board until you find the place that invites uploaded files. If this is a public bulletin board, there may be a section entitled Shareware Files, for example.
Step6
Once you have located the file, follow the bulletin board's instructions for transferring. You may be asked to use the Transfer menu and select Send File.
Step7
When you have finished transferring the file, exit the program to break the connection.

Transfer a File to a Friend's Computer

Step1
You can transfer files from your computer to a friend's computer if you are both using HyperTerminal and a telephone modem.
Step2
Phone your friend and ask if he or she will set the computer to receive the transfer in five minutes. This will give your friend time to set the computer to receive the file.
Step3
Open HyperTerminal and connect to your friend's computer using a previous or new connection.
Step4
Go to the Transfer menu and click on Send File. A window will appear containing a text box that asks for the name and path of the file.
Step5
Enter the path of the file that is to be transferred. If necessary, use the Browse button to search your hard disk for the file.
Step6
If possible, select Zmodem as your Transfer Protocol.
Step7
The transfer will occur.
Step8
When completed, exit or quit the connection.
